Railroad Media Archive
Добавлен 8 июн 2015
Think of this channel as a museum of railroad-related audio-visual materials. Over the years I've collected different films, videotapes and audio from photographers who have passed on or have been given to me because "I'm the video guy". All I've wanted to do is digitize them at the highest possible quality, restore them, and share them with others. Contemporary high definition videos are taken by me.
For the railfans out there. Not every last detail of every video is known. Most materials have little to no notes about dates, locations and train info. That is why some of my videos have very basic information, and many questions are answered with "I don't know". Much of the information in video descriptions comes from my own knowledge and research.
Any donations or potential ad revenue from this channel go to paying for cloud storage, acquiring and refreshing hard drives, as well as general maintenance of computers and video gear.

Amtrak Ride St. Louis to Chicago (Circa 1973)
Ride on the former Alton/GM&O from St. Louis to Chicago then back to Joliet. Date unknown, but it couldn't have been long after the August 1972 merger of Illinois Central and Gulf, Mobile & Ohio.
The train ridden was likely #302, the "Abraham Lincoln". Typical of early Amtrak a rainbow consist of locomotives and rolling stock is present, as evidenced by the Penn Central E8 on the point, and the photographer riding ex-Great Northern Parlor-Observation car "Port of Seattle".
Stops were at Alton, Springfield, and Bloomington, including an unplanned stop for what appeared to be a hot bearing.

Tip jar: ko-fi.com/railroadmediaarchive A fan trip on the South Shore with two photo runbys at Michigan City; one downtown, and the other where the C&O (former Pere Marquette passes over). If the train looks like it's going fast it certainly was, with portions of the CSS&SB good for probably 90 MPH running in that era.

Pretty much the first train videos I ever took using my borrowed parents' VHS-C camera and tripod of a day at Marion, Ohio. Because VHS-C tapes only lasted 30 minutes on the standard speed I used the SLP speed to get 90 minutes of record time, which is the reason for the loud hiss in the audio and some of the visual jitter.

It's been said before " the best place to watch trains is from a train"
GG1's speeding is what they do best, they do look fast.💪
Nice to see 421 active again
I constantly wish I was born in the 80’s so I could railfan in the 90’s. But I was born 2006 been buffing since around 2020
Great video Glad you posted this i remember seeing these units go by the Bethlehem Steel Steelton Pa. Plant. I remember see the track walked once in awhile with a wrench to tighten the loose joint bar bolts
I guess you recorded the sound of the projector, I understand that it's nostalgic and all that, but it's pretty much just too loud. I'd prefer not muting the volume but the projector noise is too much at that volume for any length over a minute.
It's a computer sound effect.
@@RailroadMediaArchive try adjusting the volume lower if possible. I hate muting it in case there's any other audio that I could miss. Thanks.
The footage with Quakertown & Eastern #4 would have been from one of several excursions in 1969 and 1970.
I grew up in MIchigan City and have many memories of the South Shore. I enjoyed all of this video, particularly the shots at Shops of the 700's and 800's, and the pacing shots of street running. I'm old enough to remember the old passing siding in front of the MC station, and the single-point switches associated with it. I moved away in the late 60's and didn't see much of the C&O ownership, so that was interesting, too. Cheers from Wisconsin!
Where did the Pennsy have a diamond with catenary on the crossing route?
Like the description says it's Lemo (Lemoyne) tower...basically across the river from Harrisburg station.
Wow that goes back. I worked at the Bethlehem Steel Plant in Steelton I remember seeing a lot of these Units go by in the mid 70s. Nice video and thanks for posting it.
Memories are made of this…
Foameries
Unreal footage. Hope there is more!!

I will never turn off a video that shows a GG1 in action!
I saw an abandoned bridge next to the South Shore between the three and four minute mark. Could that have been a former railroad right of wa?
Nec scire fas est omnia. (Horatius)
I believe that is a former highway bridge. In the '60s when they built the steel mill at Burns Harbor, they widened US-12 and moved it to a new alignment slightly farther south. The same location can be seen about 19:20 at a later date.
At 5:31 that looks like Mina Ohio which was once a coaling location as well as a small terminal for sev local freights in the NYC steam era.
Love the accompanying music❤
11:53 Funny how the Ex RF&P CSX 6394 happens to be the unit painted by the Cedartown paint shop in 2023
Can you do anything about the projector sound. Even just dubbing in some elevator music would be better.
Love seeing these rare gems of railroad history! As a model railroader modeling the 1970s era, these films are also a very useful reference. Thanks for posting!
Iconic blast from the past. Thank you very much indeed.
Where is/was that diamond?

@@RailroadMediaArchive any NEC crossings from the d.c area? Like Glenn dale or seabrook or Bowie? Also do you know anybody who has footage of these crossings?

@@rearspeaker6364 what is the video called?
Those new Alco C628's in the train at 0:51 to 0:54 are Ferrocaril del Pacifico units headed for delivery in Mexico. They were built in April 1964, so that dates this footage pretty well. I wonder what the Schmidt's of Philadelphia Brewing Company reefer at 3:28 was doing in the Calumet region? Thanks for posting!
Those electric locomotives would catch on fire 🔥
I love this but the ticking of the projector drove me nuts after 5 minutes
Agreed. I love the footage on this channel but can’t watch more than three minutes at a time.
Was confused when I saw those two CNW units until I remembered Conrail was short on power in its beginning and leased power from BAR, CN, and CNW
This footage is gold! The 60s/70s were a particularly "gritty" time in the Northeast. It's what I grew up with and I still love it. I can only imagine the work and time that goes into digitizing the original film and editing. Much appreciated!
This was a 400' reel that was digitized in real time about 10 years ago. What takes the longest is post processing (grain reduction, etc), which takes about a day (just letting the software go). Luckily, this film was shot in a way it didn't need a ton of editing, but I did do a little additional color correction in Davinci Resolve.
another great video ! and tons of gg1s ! the gg1 with the number 4896 was marked amtrak, and all the rest of amtraks in the 900 series. Why is that ? To my knowledge Cr had their gg1s in the 4000 series. this was a nice Time Machine , who wouldn't go back to a place like this ! that's sure is drama...thanks !
I think the Amtrak Gs were renumbered to make room for the AEM-7s, and this was shot while this was occuring.
7:11 *Bonk*
Lol I don’t think Ive ever seen a GG1 in Amtrak colors… one tuscan red and PC puke black-green
Brunswick green
@carltonkeys6025 Like I said, puke black-green….🤣🤣🤣🤷♂️
Erie Lackawaxen!!!
Does anyone know what song was playing in the background at 3:12?
Wow. This has to be one of the few movies of the GM6C electric out there.
Awesome Catches
These scenes no doubt are gold to fans who lived there at that time. Truth was, those first couple of yrs Conrail was around were tough if one of the Railroads that folded into it was a favorite. You'd still see your once proud Railroad's units wearing their old paint scheme but w/a Conrail number and just a simple "CR" logo over the roadname. Not a great time.
I fully understand your sentiment. My local line on the PRSL one day abruptly changed from perpetually dirty black PRSL geeps to those shiny baby blue locomotives. I was only a teenager at the time, but I was devastated. Took me nearly forty years to accept it. Now I miss that Conrail blue.
@@karlfey Sounds like we were about the same age. The Erie Lackawanna was my railroad. Watching that 2 track mainline pulled up was truly one of the saddest times in my life! I couldn't help but grudgingly admire what Conrail was accomplishing tho. I too miss ol Big Blue.
@@b3j8 very sad indeed. I guess we should consider ourselves lucky to remember our respective railroads pre-Conrail. We experienced history.
That continues to this day. My road was the AT&SF. Now almost all of their once proud "Super Fleet" red & silver warbonnet units are so faded they'd almost might as well not be painted at all, and most of the rest have been repainted in BNSF orange and green (which was formerly Great Northern orange & green).
@@FreihEitner True indeed. I remember when they first came out.
First comment!!! Love the GG1 content!
I work this line it’s amazing to see how much is still there even though looking a little worse for ware
Very cool footage! Like stepping into a time machine
Where in kc was this?
Uhhh yeahhhhh Detroit City Train's On folk's !!!!!
I love the idling motor it sounds so awesome
Outstanding! Thanks for posting.
Shock and Awe! These points scenes were included in Clear Block Productions Grand Trunk into the 90's Volume 3, and honestly for a long time I wondered how someone could be close enough to watch the points change on what looks to be a siding/secondary track. The operator was just showing you the points moving? This is great footage, I love seeing the change of this area over the years compared to other photos. I hate that they cut out the footage of the tower overview.
Excellent video, abrupt edit at 3:58.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I cut out the redundant bit using RUclips's internal video editor.
@@RailroadMediaArchive It looked like something missed. No problem. Keep the great videos coming! Thank you.
